I have quite a bit of body fat (230 lbs and 25%) to be exact. What has ruined my metabolism is from years of trying to starve myself. Now I find it near impossible to lose weight. I try everything. I just stay the same. Maybe starvation mode isnt true for some people, but it is true for others. And not extreme cases, either. If you restrict calories below say 1600 (if you are male), then over time your body will start getting better at storing fat. It will be harder for you to lose weight because it wants to hold on to fat , believing you are in a famine. This is why my metabolism is basically ruined. Im not talking about skipping a few meals every now and then. Im talking about what most dieters try to do , which is severe calorie restriction.

Almost every guy wants to weigh over 200 lbs and have low bodyfat but for the majority of people not using Steriods etc, this is not going to happen. Most guys that i have observed at the gym are in eternal bulk mode. They have size but also the accompanying bodyfat as evidenced by larger waists etc. I know this b/c at 6 feet, I used to weigh 215 lbs and loved the weight aspect. The problem I had was that my waist was 38 inches. Now I am 170lbs, cut and have good symmetry. My focus is on boxing with strength training only as a supplement.

Of course, fasting — regardless of the method — isn’t for everyone. If you have any medical conditions or special dietary requirements, it’s smart to consult a doctor before giving intermittent fasting a shot. Anyone who tries it should also plan to be highly self-aware while fasting. If it’s not agreeing with you, or if you need to eat a little something to hold you over, that’s just fine. It takes our bodies time to adjust, and some require more than others. Keep in mind that hormones can make it harder for women to follow a fasting plan than for men. “Be cautious at first, and start slowly [with a shorter fast],” Shanks recommends. If it doesn’t make you feel better, try something different, or accept the fact that maybe fasting isn’t for you.

I had come from the old school bodybuilding mentality of, “if you fall off the wagon, get right back on, immediately. ” The old way of thinking essentially stated that even if you had a cheat meal/cheat day, if you didn’t go back to your regularly scheduled meals, you’d do more harm than good.  In my case, this meant a bowl of oatmeal and several eggs first thing in the morning.  After a night of eating pasta, ice cream, brownies and steak (yes, all at once), this last thing I wanted to do first thing in the morning was eat.

mine has been only mildly elevated, a bit over 100, but it was a surprise because I would have expected fasting and low carbs to make it low; I’ve come to understand that the body adapts and probably the reason that fasting and exercise while fasting is so comfortable for me is that my body is keeping me out of the precarious low blood sugar state. I have incorporated more carbs, based on your writings, since the last time I had a test so it will be interesting to see next time. I like having the routine of IF, especially fasted exercise, but can see possible benefit to mixing it up sometimes. Lately just experimenting with adding Coconut Butter and heavy cream in the coffee sometimes
