Body improvement medicine

A full medical, psychosexual and psychiatric history should be documented. The physician should explore the patient’s concerns about appearance and body image (ruling out body dysmorphic disorder ). Additionally, the physician should inquire about overall beliefs, personal values, and assumptions that the patient is making about his or her genitals. Given that Koro is often an “attack” with a great deal of associated anxiety, the physician should ascertain the patient’s emotional state along with the timeline from onset to the presentation at the examination. Serious work on placebos continued over the next two decades. Investigators pursued many fruitful lines of research, but two of the most productive turned out to be the exploration of psychological mechanisms in experimental subjects identified as "placebo reactors" 44 and the specification of the brain biochemistry which underlay placebo effects. 45 In one of the most suggestive studies in this second line of research, published in The Lancet , Levine, Gordon, and Fields concluded that the activity of "endogenous opioids"(the body's own opium-like substances) accounts for "placebo analgesia." Although there are many unanswered questions, by the late 1970s it appeared as if both clinicians and basic scientists had accepted the placebo effect as a central phenomenon in medicine--indeed, as one of the body's arsenal of self-protective weapons--and thought it ultimately explicable in the most modern biochemical terms.

Projects supported under this FOA are intended to improve existing, and create new, animal models for regenerative medicine. Efficient use of animal models is facilitated by development of specific resources for characterizing, archiving and distributing animals as well as research tools, reagents and stem cell lines of utility to research on a variety of animal species. Development of an animal-based resource often requires preliminary work that is research-based. This resource-related research is often not hypothesis driven and cannot be addressed appropriately by NIH R01 or R21 grant applications. Accordingly, ORIP/DPCPSI supports resource grants which have the following features:
